Best Autumn Hiking in North Carolina
Are you looking for the best spots to go hiking in the North Carolina mountains? We have the top-tier list here that is ideal for those who want to get outside in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville, Pisgah National Forest, and many more hidden gems!
Summit Calloway Peak
Head to Grandfather Mountain to tackle this 6.3-mile return trail that completes nearly 2,000 feet of elevation gain! But don’t worry, you will be rewarded with your efforts with far-reaching views of the nearby mountains, peaks, and trails that zigzag through the infamous Blue Ridge Mountains. It is no surprise that this is one of the most popular day hikes from the nearby towns of Banner Elk, Grandfather, Linville, Sugar Mountain, or Newland.
After you tackle the summit, head to Banner Elk and grab a bite to eat at Stonewalls Restaurant, an American classic dining establishment that offers prime rib dishes, succulent steaks, mouthwatering seafood, olive oils, and much more. We recommend getting the jumbo shrimp cocktail or the crab stuffed mushroom to split with the table. For an entree, you can’t go wrong with one of their famous steaks, like the filet mignon, or the prime rib dishes, like the house cut.
Looking Glass Rock
Another fan favorite that people flock to all autumn long is Looking Glass Rock, an adventurous and fun-filled trail that brings you just over 5.4 miles and takes you up over 1570 feet of elevation gain! We love doing this hike in the fall season, so you can see the beautiful fall foliage and the animals out and about. If you are an avid rock climber, you can even tackle one of the slabs after doing the peak hike!
Green Knob
Green Knob is a slightly easier hike in terms of elevation gain, but still takes you nearly 9.25 miles out and back to check out the incredible viewpoint. However, heading here for sunset is one of the best things you can do during your upcoming fall trip to North Carolina. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, you can complete this section of the Mountain To Sea Trail — and continue on to do the entire thing! From the top of this peak, you can see expansive views of the Middle Prong Wilderness and the lush green pine forests down below.
Deep Gap Trail
For those who just can’t get enough of a great afternoon out hiking on the numerous trials, we recommend heading to Mt. Mitchell State Park — you will be able to take your pick of whatever trail you are in the mood for, whether it is an easy saunter close to the river or a tough and difficult lung-busting peak hike. We recommend doing the Deep Gap Trail, an 8.25-mile out-and-back trail that takes you over 2,000 feet into the air. This one is not for the faint of heart, as the elevation gain here is a good workout for advanced hikers and elite athletes.
After this full-day excursion, head to the nearby town of Pensacola or Burnsville to grab a bite to eat and refresh. We recommend going to Pig and Grits for some typical American cooking, featuring hearty barbecue dishes, sweet tea, mashed potatoes, and much more. Try the fried green tomatoes as a starter for you and your guests, coupled with some jerk-seasoned chicken wings with your choice of dipping sauces. We also love splitting the loaded mac and cheese kettle with bacon and green onion and the cast iron skillet of chicken and biscuits!
